Why is Zimbabwe considered one of Africa's best walking safari destinations?
Zimbabwe has one of the continent's most rigorous professional guiding traditions. Guides train for years in tracking, ecology, firearms handling and animal behaviour before qualifying to lead guests on foot. In places such as Mana Pools, walking is not an optional extra but a defining way to experience the landscape. The focus shifts from simply finding animals to understanding tracks, wind, vegetation and behaviour. This makes Zimbabwe especially rewarding for travellers who want a more active and interpretive safari.
When is the best time to visit Zimbabwe for safari?
The dry season from May to October is the classic period for safari travel. Wildlife gathers near rivers and waterholes, vegetation becomes thinner and walking conditions are generally more comfortable. September and October can be extremely hot, although wildlife viewing is often outstanding. The green season brings dramatic skies, birding and fewer visitors, but some remote camps close during the rains. Victoria Falls is at its fullest soon after the regional rains, while lower water later in the year can reveal more of the rock face.
Can I combine Victoria Falls with a Zimbabwe safari?
Yes. Victoria Falls works particularly well at the beginning or end of a safari in Hwange, Mana Pools or Malilangwe. Hwange is the easiest pairing, with road, rail and air connections from the Falls area. Mana Pools usually requires a light aircraft transfer and feels considerably more remote. Two nights at Victoria Falls is enough for most travellers, while three nights allows time for river activities, view points and a slower pace before or after the safari.
Is Mana Pools suitable for a first safari?
It can be, but it suits travellers who are comfortable with a more active and remote experience. Mana Pools is known for walking and canoeing, seasonal camps and close encounters with wildlife along the Zambezi floodplain. It is less about ticking off a checklist from a vehicle and more about reading the landscape. First-time visitors who enjoy adventure and strong guiding may love it, while those wanting an easier introduction could combine it with Hwange or begin in aprivate reserve elsewhere.
How many days should I spend on safari in Zimbabwe?
Seven to ten safari nights allows time to combine two contrasting regions, such as Hwange and Mana Pools, without rushing. Add two nights for Victoria Falls if it is part of the journey. Four nights in a remote camp is often more rewarding than two or three because wildlife movement, weather and walking opportunities vary daily. Zimbabwe is a destination where depth matters, and a slower itinerary gives the guiding team time to tailor the experience around what is happening on the ground.
