What is the best month to visit Tanzania for the Great Migration?
There is no single best month because the Great Migration moves through the Serengeti throughout the year. From December to March, the herds gather on the southern plains for calving season. Between June and July, they move through the western corridor, while July to October often brings river crossings in the northern Serengeti. Rainfall determines the exact movement, so no date can guarantee a particular event. The strongest itinerary follows the likely location of the herds while still choosing areas with rewarding resident wildlife.
Should I visit the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Crater?
Ideally, visit both. The Serengeti offers scale, movement and a sense of space, with wildlife spread across vast plains and different regions throughout the year. The Ngorongoro Crater is more concentrated, with a remarkable density of animals within a dramatic volcanic landscape. The crater can be busier and is usually experienced on a day visit, while the Serengeti rewards several nights. Together, they provide two very different perspectives on northern Tanzania rather than competing versions of the same safari.
How many days do I need for a Tanzania safari?
Eight to twelve nights is a comfortable range for a northern Tanzania safari. This gives you time for the Serengeti, Ngorongoro and one additional area such as Tarangire without rushing. A shorter trip is possible, but long road transfers and frequent camp changes can quickly reduce the time spent actually watching wildlife. Travellers adding southern parks, chimpanzee tracking in Mahale or a beach stay should allow closer to two weeks or more.
Can I combine a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar?
Yes. A Serengeti and Zanzibar combination is one of East Africa's most natural bush-and-beach pairings. Light aircraft connections make it possible to move from safari camp to the coast without returning to a major city for long. Zanzibar offers historic Stone Town, warm Indian Ocean water and a wide choice of beach styles, from lively resorts to secluded retreats. For a quieter finish, islands such as Pemba or private coastal properties may suit travellers looking for more privacy.
Is Tanzania suitable for a first African safari?
Absolutely. Tanzania offers some of Africa's most recognisable landscapes and consistently strong wildlife viewing. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire create a varied first journey, while experienced guides help make sense of the scale and seasonal movement. The main consideration is pacing. Distances can be substantial, so a well-designed itinerary should limit unnecessary transfers and match camp locations to the season. For travellers who want iconic scenery and a deep sense of wilderness, Tanzania is an outstanding place to begin.
