EAST AFRICA

Rwanda

An hour with mountain gorillas, and one of Africa's great conservation stories.
WHY GO THERE

Where Conservation Became Policy

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park offers something few places on earth can: a quiet, closely regulated hour in the presence of mountain gorillas, in a country that has rebuilt itself around conservation as policy, not just principle. Akagera National Park, in the east, adds classic savannah game viewing to the same journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you go. Can’t find the answers you’re looking for? Please chat to our team.
How difficult is gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
The difficulty varies from day to day and from one gorilla family to another. Some treks take less than two hours, while others involve steep, muddy terrain at altitude and several hours of walking. Porters are highly recommended, both for practical support and because their work directly benefits surrounding communities. Travellers should arrive with reasonable fitness, sturdy foot wear and realistic expectations. Guides and trackers manage the pace carefully, and the reward is a closely regulated hour in the presence of mountain gorillas.
Is Rwanda or Uganda better for gorilla trekking?
Rwanda usually offers shorter road transfers, polished logistics and easy access from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park. Uganda often feels more expansive and can combine gorilla trekking with chimpanzees, savannah wildlife and a broader range of landscapes. Trekking conditions in both countries depend on the gorillas' location and the weather. Rwanda may suit travellers with limited time or those pairing gorillas with another country, while Uganda often works best for guests who want a fuller stand alone journey.
When is the best time to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
Gorilla trekking is possible throughout the year. The drier periods from June to September and December to February generally bring firmer trails and easier walking conditions. The wetter months can mean more mud, but the forest is particularly lush and visitor numbers may be lower. Gorillas do not migrate seasonally, so sightings are not restricted to a particular month. The best time should also account for permit availability, the rest of your itinerary and your tolerance for rain.
Can I combine gorilla trekking with atraditional safari in Rwanda?
Yes. Akagera National Park provides savannah game viewing, boat safaris and Big Five wildlife within the same country. This allows travellers to combine the forests of Volcanoes National Park with lakes, grasslands and open-country wildlife. Rwanda also pairs easily with Kenya, Tanzania or Botswana for a broader safari. A well-paced itinerary usually includes at least two gorilla treks, time to recover between them and enough nights in Akagera to avoid treating it as an afterthought.
Is Rwanda worth visiting if I am only going forthe gorillas?
Yes, but the country offers far more than a single trek. Kigali is clean, creative and historically important, while Volcanoes National Park also offers golden monkey tracking, forest walks and strong conservation stories. Akagera adds a contrasting safari landscape, and Lake Kivu can provide a quiet pause between regions. Spending a little longer in Rwanda gives context to the gorilla experience and makes the journey feel complete rather than built around one extraordinary hour.
