WHY GO THERE

Where Walking Safaris Began

Zambia is where the walking safari began, and it remains one of the least crowded, most authentically guided safari destinations left. South Luangwa, the Lower Zambezi, and Kafue offer an intimacy that vehicle-based safaris rarely match, with Victoria Falls close by to open or close the journey.

Why is Zambia known as the birthplace of the walking safari?
The modern walking safari was pioneered in Zambia's South Luangwa Valley, where guides developed a way of exploring wildlife areas slowly and respectfully on foot. That tradition remains central to the country's safari identity. Walking reveals details that are easily missed from a vehicle, including tracks, insects, plants, alarm calls and the subtle relationship between species. Zambia's best walking safaris are led by highly trained guides and accompanied by an armed scout, with routes adapted to conditions and guest ability.
Is Zambia a good choice for a first safari?
Yes, particularly for travellers who value strong guiding, low visitor numbers and a more immersive style of safari. South Luangwa offers excellent game drives as well as walking, making it possible to ease into the experience rather than spend the entire trip on foot. The Lower Zambezi adds boating and canoeing, while Kafue brings scale and solitude. Zambia is less polished in places than some better-known destinations, but that is part of its appeal.
When is the best time to visit Zambia?
May to October is the main safari season, with dry weather and wildlife concentrating near rivers and permanent water. June to August brings cooler mornings and comfortable walking conditions. September and October are hotter, but game viewing can be exceptional. The green season from November to April transforms the landscape and is excellent for birding and photography, although some remote camps close. South Luangwa also offers specialist seasonal experiences in areas that remain accessible during the rains.
What makes South Luangwa famous for leopard sightings?
South Luangwa combines healthy leopard populations with productive riverine woodland and a long tradition of night drives. Leopards are naturally elusive, but experienced guides understand their territories, movements and preferred habitats. Evening drives allow guests to search after sunset, when these cats become more active. Sightings can never be guaranteed, yet the valley remains one of Africa's most reliable places to encounter leopard, alongside excellent lion, elephant, hippo and wild dog viewing.
Can I combine Zambia with Victoria Falls or Botswana?
Yes. Livingstone is Zambia's gateway to Victoria Falls and connects easily with the Lower Zambezi, South Luangwa and Botswana. A journey might begin with the Falls, continue to the Lower Zambezi for river-based activities and finish in Botswana's Okavango Delta. Zambia also pairs naturally with Zimbabwe for travellers interested in walking and canoeing. Light aircraft links make these combinations practical, although baggage limits and transfer timing need to be planned carefully.
