WHY GO THERE

Two Treks, One Country

Uganda pairs mountain gorilla trekking with chimpanzee tracking in a single journey, through Bwindi's rainforest, Kibale's forest, and Murchison Falls' savannah and river, seeing a fraction of the visitor numbers of its neighbours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you go. Can’t find the answers you’re looking for? Please chat to our team.
Is Uganda or Rwanda better for gorilla trekking?
Uganda offers a broader journey, with gorillas in Bwindi or Mgahinga, chimpanzees in Kibale and savannah wildlife in parks such as Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls. Rwanda offers easier access from Kigali and often suits shorter itineraries. Trekking can be demanding in either country, and neither guarantees an easier route. Choose Uganda for variety and a deeper standalone trip; choose Rwanda for efficient logistics or a shorter gorilla extension to another safari destination.
Can I see gorillas and chimpanzees on the same Uganda trip?
Yes. This is one of Uganda's greatest strengths. Mountain gorillas are tracked in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga, while Kibale Forest is one of Africa's leading chimpanzee destinations. The journey between them also reveals crater lakes, villages and changing landscapes. Allow at least eight to ten nights for both experiences, and longer if adding Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth National Park. Two gorilla treks can be worth while because each forest encounter is different.
How difficult is gorilla trekking in Uganda?
The terrain in Bwindi can be steep, humid and muddy, with trekking times ranging from a few hours to most of the day. The gorillas' location determines the route, so fitness helps but does not guarantee a shorter trek. Porters provide valuable support and should be considered part of the experience rather than an emergency measure. Good boots, gloves, long trousers and rain protection are essential. Travellers with mobility concerns should discuss this early so the planning team can request a suitable trekking sector where possible.
When is the best time to visit Uganda?
The drier periods from June to September and December to February generally offer easier trekking and road conditions. Uganda's equatorial climate means rain is possible throughout the year, particularly in forest areas. The wetter months bring lush scenery, strong birding and fewer visitors, but trails may be more challenging. General wildlife viewing is possible year-round. Permit availability and the order of your route are often just as important as choosing a particular month.
Is Uganda a good destination for experiencedsafari travellers?
Yes. Uganda feels distinct from the classic open-plains safari. Its appeal lies in primates, rainforest, river systems, volcanic landscapes and a sense of discovery. Travellers can combine gorillas and chimpanzees with boat safaris, shoebill searches and traditional game viewing. Roads and travel days can be longer than in some destinations, so it suits guests who value variety and depth over seamless luxury at every stage. Carefully chosen lodges and private flights can make the journey more comfortable.
