Frequently Asked Questions

Is South Africa the best place for a first African safari?
For many travellers, yes. South Africa combines straight forward international access, excellent private reserves and a wide range of accommodation. Greater Kruger is known for consistent Big Five viewing, particularly leopard, while private reserves allow off-road tracking and carefully managed sightings. It is also easy to combine safari with Cape Town, the Winelands or the coast. The result is a varied first journey without complicated border crossings or excessive internal travel.
What is the difference between Kruger National Park and the private reserves?
Kruger National Park is a vast public reserve where visitors and guides follow established roads and park rules. The private reserves along its western boundary share the same unfenced ecosystem, but generally offer fewer vehicles, off-road access at selected sightings and guided night drives. Private lodges also include accommodation, meals and twice-daily game drives. Kruger suits independent travellers and broad exploration, while private reserves provide a more guided and intimate safari experience.
When is the best time to visit Greater Kruger?
May to September is the classic dry season, with cooler temperatures, thinner vegetation and wildlife gathering around water. October can be hot but rewarding before the summer rains arrive. From November to March, the bush becomes green, migratory birds return and many animals give birth. Summer offers beautiful light and a lively landscape, although heat and afternoon storms are more common. Greater Kruger works year-round, so the best season depends on whether you prioritise visibility, photography, birding or atmosphere.
Can I combine Cape Town with a safari?
Yes, and it is one of Africa's easiest and most rewarding combinations. Direct domestic flights connect Cape Town with airports serving Greater Kruger, and private charters can shorten the final transfer to certain reserves. Four nights in Cape Town and four nights on safari is a strong minimum, while ten to fourteen days allows time for the Winelands or Whale Coast as well. Cape Town can come before or after safari depending on international flight schedules and preferred pacing.
Is South Africa suitable for a family or multi-generational safari?
Very much so. South Africa has family villas, malaria-free reserves, private vehicles and activities designed for different ages. Greater Kruger suits families seeking exceptional wildlife, while reserves in the Eastern Cape, Waterberg and parts of KwaZulu-Natal provide alternatives depending on season and health considerations. A private vehicle is especially valuable for mixed-age groups because drives can be shortened or adjusted. The best family journeys balance safari time with pools, flexible meals and enough space between activities.
