SOUTHERN AFRICA

Mozambique

The Benguerra Archipelago, and the coastline that follows a bush safari.
WHY GO THERE

Where the Bush Meets the Sea

Mozambique's islands, particularly the Benguerra Archipelago, are where a Southern Africa journey often ends: white sand, warm water, and a pace that lets everything from the bush finally settle. Gorongosa National Park inland adds one of the continent's great conservation recovery stories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mozambique a good beach destination after a safari?
Yes. Mozambique pairs warm Indian Ocean water and private island lodges with easy access from Southern Africa's safari regions. The Bazaruto Archipelago is particularly well suited to travellers coming from Greater Kruger or Johannesburg. Days can be as active or quiet as you choose, with snorkelling, diving, dhow sailing, fishing and long stretches of beach. Unlike a large resort finish, Mozambique often retains a strong sense of place and works beautifully after an intense safari.
When is the best time to visit Mozambique?
April to November generally brings drier weather, lower humidity and good conditions for beach stays. The warmer months from December to March can be hot and wet, witha greater risk of tropical storms in some coastal areas. Diving and snorkelling conditions vary by region, wind and season, so the best month depends on the archipelago and activities planned. Travellers hoping to see seasonal marine life should match dates carefully to the relevant coastline.
Can I combine Mozambique with a South African safari?
Yes. Greater Kruger and Mozambique form one of Southern Africa's most convenient bush-and-beach combinations. Scheduled and charter flights connect safari airports with Vilanculos, the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. A typical journey might include four or five safari nights followed by four to six nights on the coast. The combination works particularly well for honeymoons and families because the beach stay provides time to slow down after early safari mornings.
Where are the best places to snorkel and dive in Mozambique?
The Bazaruto Archipelago is known for clear water, reefs and marine life, while the Quirimbas Archipelago in the north offers a more remote island experience. Tofo is famous for larger marine species and suits travellers who prioritise diving over seclusion. Conditions and accessibility differ widely, so the right choice depends on experience level, season and preferred style of accommodation. Luxury island lodges usually arrange private or small-group excursions directly from the property.
How many days should I spend in Mozambique after safari?
Five to seven nights is ideal for most travellers. Four nights can work when flight schedules align, but weather and transfer time can make a very short stay feel rushed. A longer visit gives you several good sea days, time to recover from safari and room for both activities and doing very little. Travellers combining more than one coastal region should allow at least ten nights because domestic connections can take time.
